Diabetes

On Friday, February 13, 2004, our 5-year old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes. This wasn't exactly something that we were prepared for. After all, she had only been sick with a virus for a couple of days - at least that is what we thought. We found out soon enough that we were certainly mistaken. With an initial blood sugar reading of 1631, we were faced with the uncertainties of what would happen to get her blood sugar level back in line

God went about performing a miracle in the life of our daughter. After 2 days in Intensive Care, she was moved to a private room on Sunday, February 15th, and was discharged on Monday, February 16th. We thank God every day for touching our daughter and allowing us to bring her back home. The staff of WakeMed in Raleigh were marvelous in meeting our every need.

Then, on July 19, 2004, lightning struck twice. Our 4-year old son was showing signs that we missed early on with our daughter. He was diagnosed on that day with Type 1 diabetes as well. Under the direction of our daughter's doctor, we started his insulin treatment that very night. We were very fortunate that the doctors agreed that based on our "experience" with our daughter, hospitalization was not necessary.

This particular website is designed to assist us with links to websites that are important to diabetics as well as a planned database for us to store the carbohydrate count for various foods. This has so far been one of our biggest challenges - counting carbohydrates. We thought we were ahead of the game since we had been counting carbohydrates for the Atkins Diet but when it comes to counting carbohydrates for a diabetic, it is totally different.
