Hauling off the Trash to Save Money

Hauling off the Trash
You can save $200 -$300 a year by hauling your own trash to the landfill.

I mean literally hauling off the trash. We live in a rural area, we are not in a sub-division and we only live a couple of miles from the landfill which we drive by often.  So all of this makes perfect sense.
By the end of December last year our yearly payment to the company that we used to pick up our trash was due for the next year.  We paid yearly so we could get a free month.  The costs was $250.00 per year.  Now that’s not too much for the convenience of having someone come by every Tuesday in the wee hours of the morning to pick up the trash.  It’s like having a trash Ginnie and the job was done before the light of day and we were good to go again for a week.  The problem occurred on our part when we often forgot to put the trash container down at the end of the driveway the night before.
So again, $250.00 per year or $20.00 – $25.00 per month isn’t really that much to pay for that convenience.
Well being the frugal minded folks that we are we decided to go ahead and give hauling our trash to the dump a try.  We had tossed around the idea for several years, and every time we said, that we would do that when we got a truck.  We still don’t have the truck, but decided to go for it anyway.
The year is almost over and what can we say about Hauling Off the Trash?
Positive:
It really hasn’t been bad or too much of an inconvenience.  It took us a while to get used to it.  We would drive right by the landfill without the trash many times before we got in the habit of thinking about taking the trash with us when we were going that way.
The first of January we bought two large outside trashcans and a big box of heavy duty trash bags.  We still use the small kitchen bags for inside and just use the heavy ones for outside in the cans.  We don’t want them to get yucky and smelly, so the investment for the heavy duty bags is a must.
The cost of the two cans was about $14.00 each and the cost for a box of 90 heavy duty trash bags was about $12.00.
For the cost of about 1 month of trash pick up, we were set for the year.
Another positive:  We go that way often so we can take the trash more often than once a week.  We don’t have to worry about the trash smelling terrible out by the carport for several days in the summer.

So far so good! We have saved over $200.00 this year just by Hauling Off the Trash ourselves.

Maybe you can consider this for next year and save a little money too.
