According to an independent survey that asked 2,000 parents to name the 4 most prominent symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes, 90 percent of them couldn’t.

I understand exactly where those 9 out of every 10 parents are.  I was there too, before our daughter was diagnosed.

The four main symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes: Excessive Thirst, Frequent Urination, Extreme Tiredness, and Unexplained Weight Loss. Another symptom which comes after the first four is strange smelling breath.  Some describe the smell as fruity, but I say it smells more like fingernail polish remover.  That is the smell of the breath of a person that has ketones.

As a parent you can explain all those symptoms away.  If it’s hot and humid for several days you say that’s why they are drinking so much, then of course that’s why they are peeing so much.  If they are very active kids you say that’s the cause of the tiredness.  If they are getting taller  you may not notice the weight loss so much.

After your child has been diagnosed you will beat yourself up over the fact that the symptoms were so clear but yet you didn’t recognize them.

The first step to recognizing the symptoms is to first know the symptoms.

Again, know the symptoms: Thirsty a lot, peeing a lot, tired a lot, losing weight

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child call your doctor right away.  Don’t put it off.  You can avoid a very sick child being in ICU for several days by noticing the symptoms early and getting treatment.

We did recognize the symptoms when our son was diagnosed, just 5 months after our daughter.  We checked his BG and called the doctor.  We went in, the doctor ran the tests, and we avoided the hospital stay and the very, very sick child.

Treatment:   Insulin – Insulin is not a cure, it is life support.  We are thankful for it, but we still want a cure. At this time, there is not a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
